It's Time To Build A Boat

I've wanted to build a boat for a long time.  There are plans for two on my desk upstairs. One is for Footloose a sailing skiff designed by Warren Jordan. The other one is also a sailing skiff. It is a Stephen Redmond design he calls Bluegill. Both boats suit me just fine. I've had the plans for some time but haven't been able to motivate myself to get started building either one. I've come up with lots of reasons excuses to keep putting it off.

In the meantime, we've transitioned into more of an outfitter presence at UG White where I work. That got me looking closer at kayaks. So, after studying  the traditional skin-on-frame method of building them and discovering Dave Gentry's Chuckanut 15 I've come up with a way to get the boat building idea going again. I'll build the kayak first and see where that takes me. There's  lots of water to explore nearby and the kayak design seems perfect. I can also us it to get some fly fishing in. Something I've haven't done in way too long. The worst that can happen is I'll decide the kayak isn't my thing... but it would look really cool hanging inside the store. The skiff project will be next.

I've ordered the plans from Dave, they are here and the project is underway. I'm photographing most of the steps and will post them during the building process. The picture below is of a finished Chuckanut 15. Each completed boat is unique. Mine will be no exception. It's time to build a boat!
